About Dog House Training.

Now that you have decided to have a pet dog for your family, you should know how to train it so that it becomes a perfect member of your family and lives up to the reputation of being ‘man’s best friend’.

Before you start house training your puppy, you must have a good understanding of what the pup will need. This will depend upon its breed. You should also learn about its parentage and the stock it comes from.

There many excellent ways to house train puppies. Out of these, you should select one that will suit you and your puppy. You should also decide on what aids you would use to train your puppy so that it fits in well with your family.

Teaching your pup to obey you is the first thing it should learn when you house train it. It is essential that before everything else, it is taught obedience to commands.

Dogs can be taught to obey commands using either leash training or reward training. You should choose one of these. Your choice must be based not only on your preference but also on the breed of your dog.

Certain breeds of dogs, like for example Alsatians and German Shepherds, require leash training to teach them obedience.

If you plan to raise your dog as a guard dog, it would be best to use leash training to teach it to obey commands. It takes a good deal of patience to teach obedience to your dog. You should also be matter of fact in choosing the tools that will help you train your puppy well.

Commonly, leashes and dog collars are used when training puppies. A leash must be used by hand. The puppy must be under constant observation when on a leash, which is either held in the hand or even tied to a post.

A hand- held leash has to be managed by physical effort. This will not be easy on the master and the dog under training.

Using either one of the leashes has its own problems. Puppies that are on leash feel that they are captives. This will want them to try get free of the leash. This restless of the puppies will pose difficulties in training them.

It would therefore be better if you fit the puppy with a collar. A collar would give the puppy unrestricted movement. There is, however, the danger that they may run out to the road and meet with a horrible accident.

This is why many people prefer electronic or battery powered collars for their dogs.

Electronic collars are designed to give mild shocks that make the dogs uncomfortable enough to stop whatever they are doing.

Electronic collars work on batteries usually. They can be operated from a distance. If you find that your dog has wandered away, all you need to do is to send a signal to the electronic collar and your dog will choose to obey and return home rather than receive electric shocks.
