Is a Bark Collar the Right Solution For Your Dog?

In the most simplistic terms, a barking collar can be used to change a dog that persists on barking all the time.  Most dogs bark for a reason, such as being a guard. Other dog’s just bark because they feel they can, such as nuisance barking.  This barking can go on throughout the day and night and is often particularly unceasing.  There may not be any reasonable excuse for your dog to bark.  He barks at cars, chipmunks in the yard, people passing by, or dust motes, but whatever the case, he just won’t quiet down.

There are many different types of techniques that people use to try to stop nuisance barking.  The best time to use these tactics, which mirror other training behavior, is when your dog is young and hasn’t yet developed the habit of barking at everything.  If that time has came and gone, and you are now facing a mature dog that barks persistently, the first thing you do is find the reason they bark.

If they are barking out of boredom, the simplest solution is to spend more time with them and get them committed in fun activities.  If you find that your dog feels very fearful, you can find ways to comfort them, such as a blanket or bed to feel secure with.  If you see that your dog is a very loud dog, training will be kind of hard, but still could happen.

This collar uses a citronella, lemon or citrus based spray that sprays in your dogs nose to make him stop unnecessary noises. The electronic bark receiver is the most popular collar. This receiver gives a small pinch of correction on his collar line.  The correction is compared to a static shock that you get during the winter if you rub your feet on the carpet.

Bark collars come in a discrepancy of sizes.  You need to make sure you pick an relevant collar, particularly if you have a small pet.  Veterinarians and trainers do not recommend using collars on dogs that are younger than five months or weigh less than four pounds. Certain bark collars go on smaller dogs but not normally smaller than four pounds. The correction may be too powerful or the collar may be to big.  You should be able to put two fingers in between the collar and your dogs neck.  While your dog is wearing his collar, you can begin training.  When your dog starts to bark continuously, say your verbal commands with a stern voice.  If they continue, the bark collar will administer a correction.  If your dog stops barking when you tell him to, be sure to compliment him and give him a treat.
