The Wonderful Boxer Dog as a Breed

Boxer dogs were originally bred in Germany from an English Bulldog and a Bullenbeisser, (which is now extinct). Boxers are stocky, medium-sized, and have short hair. Boxers may or may not have white markings and usually have brindled or fawn-colored fur.

About 20-25% of Boxers are “white Boxers,” which means they have white markings covering over 1/3 of their coat. These white Boxer dogs are not albino, but they are more likely to be deaf in one or both ears (about 18% of white Boxers experience deafness).

Healthy male Boxers range in weight from 65-75 lbs (29-34 kg) and in height from 22-25 inches (56-63 cm). Healthy female Boxers generally weigh 50-60 lbs (23-27 kg) and are 21-23.5 inches (53-60 cm) tall. Boxers usually have 6-8 puppies in a litter and their expected life span is 10-12 years.

Because of their energy and playful personalities, boxers make great pets, despite their fierce appearance. They are usually very good around children and otherwise well-behaved. In case you wanted the technical side of the breed. Here’s the AKC description.

He is harmless in the family, but distrustful of strangers, bright and friendly of temperament at play, but brave and determined when aroused. His intelligence and willing tractability, his modesty and cleanliness make him a highly desirable family dog and cheerful companion. He is the soul of honesty and loyalty, and is never false or treacherous even in his old age. ”
